Dateideas’ top 3 picks

Before we get into the full list, here’s the cheat sheet. Carlitos in Joo Chiat is our favourite pick for first dates, as we think that sharing tapas is naturally fun and low-pressure. For anniversaries, Thevar is a powerhouse. It’s got two Michelin stars and culinary prowess unlike anything else at this level in Singapore. And for your regular date night rotation, The Masses at Capitol Singapore punches absurdly above its $40-60 price point.

Best restaurants for first dates and casual dates

The trick to a good first-date restaurant is simple: it should be interesting enough that you have something to talk about, affordable enough that nobody stresses over the bill, and relaxed enough that you can be yourself. These four nail it.

1. Lola’s Cafe

Lola’s has been a neighbourhood favourite for years, and the formula hasn’t changed, well, because it doesn’t need to. The Simon Road flagship store has a cosy, cushions-and-trailing-plants energy that puts everyone at ease. The portions are generous, the craft beer selection adds a fun evening-date element and everything is nett pricing, so there’s zero bill shock here. Three outlets across Singapore (Kovan, Holland Village, Tampines Mall) means there’s always one within reach. Book through Inline or their website.

  • Cuisine: Casual Western cafe (egg benedicts, burgers, pastas, craft beers)
  • Average budget: $25-30/pax (nett)

2. Wild Honey

Credit: Wild Honey

Wild Honey is great for first dates, as the menu is a conversation starter by design. Every dish is themed by country, so you’re choosing between a Tunisian shakshuka, Japanese souffle pancakes, an English fry-up, and about a dozen other globally inspired breakfasts. Just picking what to order together is a bit of an adventure, and could even reveal something about your date without any forced icebreaker questions.

The Mandarin Gallery flagship has gorgeous Brooklyn-loft interiors with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Orchard Road. Stylish enough to feel like an occasion, relaxed enough that you won’t overthink your outfit. Book via Chope.

  • Cuisine: Globally inspired all-day breakfast
  • Average budget: $30-40/pax

3. The Summerhouse (Wildseed Cafe)

Credit: The Summerhouse (Wildseed Cafe)

If you want your first date to feel like you’ve left Singapore entirely, head up to Seletar Aerospace Park. The Summerhouse is a charming colonial bungalow surrounded by edible gardens, and the Wildseed Cafe does excellent farm-to-table sandwiches, pizzas, and pastries in a bright, pet-friendly setting (you can bring Fido along).

The real trick: if things go well over coffee, you can seamlessly transition to Wildseed Bar in the evening for live music, fairy lights, and cocktails. The drive out to Seletar becomes part of the adventure. Book through Chope or SevenRooms.

  • Cuisine: Farm-to-table cafe; evening bar with grills and cocktails
  • Average budget: $25-40/pax (cafe), $40-60/pax (bar)

4. Carlitos

Credit: Carlitos

Opened recently in November 2024, Carlitos has quickly become one of the most talked-about casual restaurants on the East Side, and it’s easy to see why. The concept is straightforward: a neighbourhood tapas bar with over 30 varieties of Spanish small plates, curated by Barcelona-born Chef Carlos Montobbio (ex-Esquina) alongside Antonio Miscellaneo of La Bottega.

Sharing tapas is arguably the ideal first-date format (well, we think so) – here, small plates keep arriving, nobody agonises over a single main and the conversation stays moving. The brick-walled interior feels like a cosy bodega somewhere in Barcelona, and the Joo Chiat setting means you can stroll the neighbourhood before or after. Tapas start from just $4, with most plates under $20.

If you’re still vibing after dinner (like we do), there’s a hidden speakeasy called the Gaudi Room at the back, seating just 18 people, inspired by the legendary architect’s designs. Reserve through their website.

  • Cuisine: Authentic Spanish tapas, 30+ varieties
  • Average budget: $50-70/pax

Best restaurants for anniversary and milestone dates

These are the rooms you save for the moments that truly matter, because these will put a dent on your wallet, guaranteed. All prices below are ++ (add roughly 20% for 10% service charge and 9% GST).

5. Odette

Three Michelin stars and ranked #25 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025 – wow. Chef Julien Royer named the restaurant after his grandmother and that love-centred origin story makes it a fitting choice for milestones. Housed in the former Supreme Court wing of the National Gallery, the dining room was refreshed in late 2024 with warmer amber tones that definitely feel more intimate than before.

Book at least a month ahead through their website; $200/pax deposit required.

  • Cuisine: Modern French with Asian inflections (three Michelin stars)
  • Average budget: $298-498++/pax

6. Jaan by Kirk Westaway

If a proposal is on the cards, or you just want a view that literally stops someone mid-sentence, this is the restaurant. Jaan seats only 35 guests on the 70th floor of Swissotel The Stamford, with panoramic views from Marina Bay Sands across the Singapore Strait. At night, the city sparkles beneath you while the intimate scale ensures every couple feels properly looked after.

Chef Kirk Westaway’s produce-driven modern British menu is genuinely distinctive in a fine dining scene that leans heavily French. Over 700 wine labels to choose from. Book through their website or email jaan.bookings@swissotel.com.

  • Cuisine: Modern British (two Michelin stars)
  • Average budget: $388++/pax (6-course tasting menu)

7. Thevar

Thevar 2.0, which reopened in mid-2025, is genuinely unlike any other fine dining room in Singapore. Chef Manogren “Mano” Thevar’s relocated space on Mohamed Sultan Road is twice the size of the original Keong Saik spot, with terracotta walls and Chettinad-inspired motifs that create an atmosphere of warm grandeur.

The chef’s table seats just two to three guests. The private dining room has its own kitchen, restroom, and private entrance, which is about as intimate as a restaurant anniversary gets. The food is bold, complex, spice-driven, and thrilling. If every special dinner you’ve had in Singapore has been French, Thevar is the correction you didn’t know you needed. Book via Chope.

  • Cuisine: Modern South Indian with European techniques (two Michelin stars)
  • Average budget: $298++/pax

8. Labyrinth

For couples who want their anniversary dinner to feel uniquely Singaporean, Labyrinth at the Esplanade is unmatched. Each course from Chef LG Han is a reimagination of local heritage dishes, from childhood hawker flavours to forgotten recipes, reinterpreted through fine dining technique. The dark, theatrical interior creates an almost cinematic atmosphere.

Personalised menus are provided as souvenirs. At $208++ for the lunch tasting menu, it’s the most accessible Michelin-starred anniversary option on this list. Book via Chope or their website.

  • Cuisine: Modern Singaporean, heritage dishes reimagined (one Michelin star)
  • Average budget: $208-298++/pax

Best restaurants for regular date nights

Now, on to the spots that won’t break the bank, but which will offer consistently good food, comfortable atmosphere, fair pricing and each other’s company.

9. PS.Cafe at Harding Road

PS.Cafe Harding Road remains Singapore’s go-to date spot for good reason. The lush jungle setting with floor-to-ceiling windows, truffle shoestring fries and a shared sticky date pudding or chocolate blackout cake to finish: it’s a formula that just works.

Book via Chope.

  • Cuisine: Modern European cafe (salads, burgers, pastas, legendary cakes)
  • Average budget: $40-60/pax

10. Claudine

Here’s a place that occupies a rare sweet spot. Claudine is run by the same Chef Julien Royer behind three-starred Odette, but it feels like a neighbourhood restaurant you’d stumble upon in the French countryside. The converted 1930s colonial chapel in Dempsey has stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings, and the food is Michelin-star-calibre without the intimidation.

The a la carte format lets you build your own meal, from a simple steak tartare and bouillabaisse to a more elaborate spread. They’ve also recently added La Terrace for outdoor sharing plates and gin-and-tonics on more casual evenings. Book through Chope or SevenRooms.

  • Cuisine: French neo-brasserie (one Michelin star)
  • Average budget: $80-120/pax

11. Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse

Credit: Bistecca Tuscan Steakhouse

Sharing a perfectly charred Bistecca alla Fiorentina over a bottle of Barolo in a candlelit century-old shophouse on Mohamed Sultan Road is one of Singapore’s most satisfying dating rituals, full stop. The exposed brick, dark wood panelling, and cosy leather booths create exactly the kind of moody atmosphere that makes you want to stay all night.

Service is warm and unhurried in the Italian tradition, and the steak quality is genuinely world-class (the F1 Wagyu T-bone at 900g or 1.1kg is meant for sharing). Handmade pastas offer a lighter alternative if you’re not in the mood for a massive steak. Book via their website.

  • Cuisine: Tuscan Italian, charcoal-grilled Wagyu steaks
  • Average budget: $80-120/pax

12. The Masses

Credit: EATBOOK

At $40-60 per person, The Masses is the best-value date night on this entire list, and the food punches far above its price point. Chef Dylan Ong (co-founder of the beloved Saveur) runs a Franco-Asian menu that’s creative without being pretentious. The dishes are conversation starters by design: there’s a foie gras pork bao, squid ink kueh pie tee, and a duck confit served over wok hei kway teow that somehow just makes sense.

The new Capitol Singapore location near City Hall MRT spots Parisian bistro-inspired decor and plenty of seating. They also do communal feast menus at $79.90++/pax (minimum three diners), which, ooo, could be a good idea for double dates. Book through Chope.

  • Cuisine: Franco-Asian fusion
  • Average budget: $40-60/pax

Worth a mention

A few more restaurants that deserve a spot on your radar: Fat Cow is an exceptional Japanese Wagyu destination with lunch sets from $40-70/pax. La Vache! on Gemmill Lane, Hong Kong’s beloved one-dish steak-frites bistro’s first international outpost, does a no-menu concept at $68++ for salad, ribeye, and unlimited fries. NOX, Dine in the Dark on Club Street here in the CBD ($88++/pax) is genuinely unforgettable, with a 12-dish mystery tasting menu in complete darkness guided by visually impaired hosts. And Kaarla Wood-Fire Grill & Bar offers some of the most dramatic rooftop dining views in Singapore.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good lighting, comfortable seating, moderate noise levels (loud enough for privacy, quiet enough to hear each other), and a menu that doesn’t require a finance degree to understand. Nett pricing is a bonus.

Not at all. Some of the most memorable anniversary meals happen at cozy restaurants with great food and personal touches. That said, places like Odette, Jaan, and Thevar offer a level of occasion and service that does make milestones feel special.

Plenty. Lola’s Cafe ($25-30/pax), The Summerhouse ($25-40/pax), and The Masses ($40-60/pax) all deliver romantic atmosphere without the fine dining price tag. PS.Cafe at Dempsey is another reliable pick at $40-60/pax.

Think about the occasion and what kind of energy you want. Fine dining is great for milestones and special celebrations where you want the full experience. Casual spots are better for getting to know someone, regular date nights, or when you just want to eat well and be comfortable without the formality.
